Former Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Dr. Katy Huff Joins Nuclear Matters Advocacy Council

Nuclear Matters is delighted to welcome Dr. Katy Huff as the newest member of the Nuclear Matters Advocacy Council. As the former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Office of Nuclear Energy, Dr. Huff merges scientific rigor with policy acumen to shape the future of nuclear innovation.

From 2021 to 2024, Dr. Huff’s leadership at the Department of Energy marked a pivotal era for nuclear energy and U.S. energy security. Her tenure coincided with a surge in extended operations, new reactors coming online, and steps toward the commercialization of next-generation reactors. Under her guidance, the U.S. committed to tripling its nuclear energy capacity by 2050 at the 2023 UN Climate Summit. Currently in academia, Dr. Huff leads the Advanced Reactors and Fuel Cycles Research Group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering Department.

Dr. Huff joins the Nuclear Matters coalition to bridge innovation and industry, ensuring that nuclear energy advocacy is grounded in practical insight, technical feasibility, and long-term resilience.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Katy Huff to the Advocacy Council,” said Nuclear Matters President John Kotek. “Her extensive experience, deep understanding of the policy landscape, fresh perspective, and unwavering commitment to advancing nuclear energy will be invaluable as we continue to champion the role of nuclear power in a secure and clean energy future.”

“We’ve made huge strides in nuclear. We’re walking forward now—but to triple nuclear capacity by 2050, we should be running,” said Dr. Huff. “I’m excited to rise to the challenge of this moment with the support of the Advocacy Council. Together, we can accelerate progress toward a net-zero energy future and ensure that momentum lasts.”

Dr. Huff joins more than a dozen leaders on the Advocacy Council, including former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Carol Browner, Executive Director of the Nuclear Innovation Alliance Judi Greenwald, and former U.S. Congressman Hon. Tom Graves. Together, the Advocacy Council unites and activates a broad spectrum of experts to shape America’s reliable energy future. View the full member network here.
