Nuclear Matters celebrates Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium (VNEC) and the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium Authority (VNECA) on the release of the Virginia nuclear industry’s strategic plan to ensure nuclear energy continues to play a pivotal role in securing the state’s carbon-free energy future. Nuclear power is already a lynchpin of the Commonwealth’s clean energy economy, providing over 2,000 jobs and more than 95% of the state’s carbon-free electricity. The industry’s plan shows nuclear energy is prepared to play an even more significant role in protecting the state’s environment and promoting economic stability.
For Virginia to reach its goal of 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045, the Commonwealth must continue to recognize the value of nuclear energy. The industry’s plan serves as a clear roadmap for how the nuclear industry will directly help achieve these objectives, including cutting-edge advanced nuclear projects, public-private partnerships and economic development, workforce education and training, and research and development opportunities at Virginia’s universities – all of which contribute to the growth of well-paying clean energy jobs.
We are pleased to see the Commonwealth of Virginia continue to work with the nuclear energy sector to accomplish its clean energy targets—and on behalf of our over 600,000 grassroots advocates, we encourage implementation of the plan’s goals to ensure Virginia meets its clean energy targets with the help of an industry already producing abundant clean power.
