Nuclear Matters co-hosted a conversation with Wharton’s Institute for Global Environmental Leadership (IGEL) on the role of nuclear energy in a carbon-free future.
The Wharton-led, Penn-wide Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership promotes knowledge for business sustainability. Per their mission, IGEL works with a diverse and interdisciplinary network to develop and disseminate innovative research and business practices to solve the most pressing environmental issues facing our planet.
Nuclear Matters Co-Chair, Senator Bayh, kicked off the conversation emphasizing that “nuclear needs to play a role” in the United States economy and climate goals. Senator Bayh highlighted the importance of diversity in our energy portfolio to those in the audience, noting that nuclear avoids 52 million tons of carbon emissions each year for the state of Pennsylvania.
Attendees received copies of the recent analysis from The Brattle Group on the value of Pennsylvania’s nuclear fleet – which supplies 93 percent of Pennsylvania’s carbon-free electricity. Nuclear also supports 15,600 in-state, full-time jobs in Pennsylvania, while contributing $2.4 billion to the state GDP.
